2017 President‘s Message

Happy New Year! I am very privileged and honored to be your Women Lawyers Association of Jefferson County 2017 President! I am excited about the year ahead and the WLA Board is planning many interesting events for the year to come. Keep on the lookout for our regular lunch meetings as well as social events and community service events that we will be planning for this year. We hope that you consider joining our organization and attending events. A membership application is available for download on this website. We welcome all types of members, from law students to seasoned attorneys, as well women and men! As always we encourage your thoughts and recommendations as to how we can make WLA better. If you have any needs or recommendations concerning WLA, please feel free to reach out to me at Lindsay.cordes@thomaslawoffices.com. Thank you for your continued interest in WLA and we hope to see you at some events this year. Let’s make 2017 one of the best years for WLA to date!

December Monthly Luncheon

Please join us for our next luncheon on Thursday, December 14. There will be no speaker at this month’s meeting.  Instead, the December luncheon is a chance to socialize and catch up with fellow WLA members.  There will be green chili wontons for appetizers, and prizes given out via random drawings throughout the meeting.

The WLA meets at the Bristol Bar & Grille Downtown, 614 West Main Street. Registration begins at 11:45 A.M. and the lunch starts at 12:00 P.M. and concludes at 1:00 P.M. The cost of the buffet lunch this month will be half off at $8.50!

October Monthly Luncheon

Please join the Women Lawyers Association for lunch on Thursday, October 12th2017. Our featured speaker will be Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear. A graduate of Vanderbilt University and University of Virginia School of Law, Attorney General Beshear worked in private practice for more than a decade before he officially took office in January 2016.  Since then, he has made great strides in furtherance of his mission of preventing and prosecuting child abuse, protecting seniors from scams and abuse, addressing Kentucky’s drug epidemic and seeking justice for victims of rape.  We hope you can join us!  

The Women Lawyers Association of Jefferson County meets at the Bristol Bar & Grille Downtown, 614 West Main Street.  Registration and the buffet style luncheon begins at 11:45 A.M.  We ask that attendees arrive no later than 11:45 A.M. at which time there will be brief announcements from WLA.  The presentation will start promptly at 12:00 P.M. and end at 1:00 P.M. The event costs $17.00 for WLA members and non-members.

Annual Meeting – Nomination for Member of the Year

It’s that time of year again!  We are now taking nominations for the 2017 Member of the Year Award and the Achievement in Excellence Award.  Nomination applications will close on Thursday, October 12, 2017.  Nomination forms will be at the meeting on September 21st and have previously been emailed to all members.  Please email the completed nominations to Lindsay.cordes@thomaslawoffices.com. or fill out during the meeting on September 21st.

Voting Rights for Women: Past, Present & Future

Please join WLA and the League of Women Voters in celebrating Women’s Equality Day on Saturday, August 26th at the Frazier History Museum. This event honors the 97th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women the right to vote. It will be held from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM, and will be FREE and open to the public. Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes will be the keynote speaker.

August Monthly Luncheon

Please join the Women Lawyers Association for lunch on Thursday, August 10th2017. Our featured speaker will be Bill Sharp, the Legal Director of ACLU of Kentucky.  A former public defender with the Louisville Metro Public Defender’s Office and the Department of Public Advocacy, Mr. Sharp is deeply committed to the pursuit of justice for all citizens in this Commonwealth.  In his current role, Mr. Sharp works to defend individual rights in the context of civil litigation.  Additionally, in his supervisory capacity, he oversees the investigation and litigation of cases involving various civil liberties issues, including but not limited to, religious freedom, free speech, voting rights, and equal protection.

July Monthly Luncheon

Please join the Women Lawyers Association for lunch on Thursday, July 13th2017. Our featured speaker will be Kasey Maier, the Executive Director of Waterfront Botanical Gardens. She will visit the WLA to discussion the mission and vision of the organization. As the beneficiary of a trust established by member Helen Harrigan, this group is working in furtherance of her dream to create and promote a garden and conservatory in Louisville.  Indeed, when work is complete at The Point, the site will house a water filtration garden, a planted trellis, a conservatory, an educational pavilion, and a Beargrass Creek overlook.  As the Executive Director, Ms. Maier will address what has been done to date, and what is in store for Louisville in the coming year.  Please join us as we learn about this exciting new development!
